Functional Movement Screen
The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a physical therapy-based tool we use to reduce your risk for injury and prioritize your safety during your time with us at Black Box. We use it to identify any existing movement limitations and to teach you corrective strategies to address your body’s specific mobility and stability needs. As an athlete, you will optimize your progress by addressing these fundamental areas of your fitness.
As a team of responsible and dedicated strength and conditioning professionals, Black Box implements the FMS system as a proactive method of addressing common concerns with our athletes. By educating both ourselves and you about the factors fundamental to your athletic success (such as previous or current pain, restrictions in your mobility or stability, and other elements of your lifestyle), we ensure your confidence in our ability to assess and progress you towards your personal goals safely and effectively.
To get started as a Black Box athlete, we require you to complete baseline movement education, what we call “Foundations.” You will be taught precisely how and why we do the movements we do here, as well as modifications and variations for each of them that are appropriate for you. You’ll continue to meet with a trainer one-on-one each month to further refine your movements, skills, and technique, as well as staying accountable to your health and fitness goals.
We start with the fundamental movements and build upon each one over the course of 3 personal training sessions. Your coach will objectively evaluate each movement and recommend a progression that keep you safe while challenging your abilities to stimulate adaptation and progress. You’ll also receive a log book to keep track of your assessments and first month’s workouts, which will help you make the most of your training.
Nutrition & Lifestyle Consultation
Fitness is just one element in the equation of your health. The Black Box paradigm for wellness & performance strongly emphasizes the other factors that contribute to your well-being, including your food choices and lifestyle habits. If you have specific goals, like weight loss or athletic performance, you can meet with one of our expert trainers to establish a month-long program of education and accountability with the step-by-step guidelines you need to achieve your goals.
We will help you realize the importance of prioritizing your health and personal goals and enable you to think critically to make better decisions about your food choices. You’ll learn the best ways to optimize your diet for your individual lifestyle and circumstances. We can also take biometric measurements, including body fat percentage, to give you an objective way to track your progress throughout the month. Private & Group Training
Work with one of our experienced and knowledgeable trainers to develop a plan to target your specific needs by improving deficiencies and optimizing strengths. Training can be provided, privately (one-on-one), semi- privately (with another athlete), or in a small group (3-10 athletes).
